Maritzburg University Rugby Club was founded on February 20, 1911 with a membership of 23 keen rugby men. Today Maritzburg Varsity Rugby Club is firmly entrenched as a professional Premier division club with a proud rugby tradition that will continue to live on in the new millennium. The Varsity Shield team is also based on the PMB campus, with regular home matches during the first semester.
